They are a Tupi-Guarani people of Misiones and Corrientes provinces descended from thirteenth-century migrants from the Amazon in search of a mythical Land without Evil, later forced into more than a century of labor on Jesuit mission yerba mate plantations.
They are an indigenous people in the Other Hispanic American people cluster of the Latin American and Caribbean Peoples. Their primary religion is Folk Catholicism, and they primarily speak Spanish.
