They are an indigenous tribal people of eastern India, recognized by the Government of India as a Scheduled Tribe and also classified as a Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG) because of their historical isolation and socioeconomic challenges.
They are an indigenous people in the Hindi people cluster of the South Asian Peoples. Their primary religion is Folk Hinduism, and they primarily speak Awadhi.
