They are a peasant community of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan tracing descent from Dang, a Rajput ruler of Sagar, though the name may instead derive from the Persian for hill, denoting hillmen, and remaining chiefly cultivators.
They are an indigenous people in the Hindi people cluster of the South Asian Peoples. Their primary religion is Hinduism, and they primarily speak Mewari.
