They are a caste‑based occupational group, found across India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.
They are an indigenous people in the Dhobi people cluster of the South Asian Peoples. Their primary religion is Hinduism, and they primarily speak Assamese.
