They are a Chatino people of Oaxaca's Tataltepec de Valdes, settled since around 400 BC and split politically from the closely related Zapotec of Monte Alban near the time of Christ, blending Catholic ritual with older sun, rain, and mountain deities.

They are an indigenous people in the Zapotec people cluster of the Latin American and Caribbean Peoples. Their primary religion is Folk Catholicism, and they primarily speak Spanish.
