They are an Indigenous highland people of West Sulawesi whose identity emerged from the Pitu Ulunna Salu ("Seven River Heads") confederation and who are closely related to the Toraja peoples while maintaining distinct Bambam-speaking traditions.

They are an indigenous people in the Toraja of Sulawesi people cluster of the Malay Peoples. Their primary religion is Sunni Islam, and they primarily speak Bambam.
